Selective Trial Test Course (STTC)

The Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills workbook is provided to offer students additional practice questions, helping to reinforce their skills. These questions are available not only in paper workbook format but also in CBT (Computer-Based Testing) format on Cyberschool, allowing students to practice in a simulated test environment.

In our classes, teachers utilise the Smart Review System to provide a comprehensive review for students. However, our extensive experience has shown that even after attending review sessions, students often struggle to retain what they’ve learnt. Rather than simply presenting the same questions again, Pre-Uni New College enhances students’ skills by allowing them to retake tests focused on the questions they previously answered incorrectly. To further support their learning, Pre-Uni New College provides each student with a Retest Challenge, dividing all incorrect questions into sets of 5. This approach ensures continuous improvement and better retention of the material.

Once students complete the Review Challenge, which is composed of questions they previously answered incorrectly, additional practice is provided. For Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, students receive 5 extra questions each. These additional questions are intentionally more difficult, aimed at further enhancing students’ analytical abilities.

During the designated Challenge period, eligible high-performing students who achieved a Top 25% ranking in Mathematical Reasoning or Thinking Skills may also access Mastery Check Questions. This feature allows them to revisit up to 10 challenging questions they answered correctly, confirm their reasoning and strengthen their understanding. The number of Mastery Check Questions may vary depending on the overall MR/TS test averages.

For Reading, after finishing the Review Challenge, students are given an additional full set of Reading 1+1 practice. This allows students to engage in more comprehensive practice, further strengthening their reading skills.

Students are encouraged to enhance their writing and editing skills by applying feedback from their initial tests. This process allows them to experiment with literary techniques and complex sentence structures, improving the overall engagement and quality of their writing. After submitting their revised work, students receive additional feedback to support continuous refinement and academic progress.

Pre-Uni New College provides exemplars from students who performed well on the same writing prompt through a Passage Arrange Activity. This activity ensures that students engage with the top-scoring writings more thoughtfully, encouraging them to carefully analyse the structure and flow of the passages. By arranging these passages, students not only enhance their understanding of effective writing techniques but also improve their ability to connect ideas coherently.

Additionally, through the Feedback Activity, students evaluate the writing of their peers. This process encourages them to reflect on the criteria for effective writing, which in turn helps them apply these insights when crafting their own work.

To build a strong foundation in English, students are provided with a Vocabulary Test that helps reinforce their understanding of essential words. The vocabulary list for this test can be found in the English Workbook, ensuring students have access to the necessary resources to enhance their language skills.

The Reading Passage and Poem Annotation guides offer more than just answer-finding strategies — they provide students with the tools to deeply engage with literature. These resources help develop critical interpretation skills, empowering students to analyse any passage or question they encounter. By focusing on a holistic understanding of literary works, the guides aim to foster a lifelong ability to approach and interpret various forms of literature with confidence, and this support is provided when students engage in Reading Challenging Review.

Pre-Uni New College provides a reference guide based on your STTC performance to help you identify selective high schools where you are most likely to succeed. This guide categorises schools into bands according to your results in Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills, and Writing, offering valuable insights for your school selection process.
